Efficient, stable and low cost field emitters are essential for field emission displays (FED), electron microscopy, vacuum electronics etc. They also have potential for high performance microwave generators. Apart from carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which are excellent field emitters, there are several potential cathode materials such as graphene and oxides/sulfides of few transition metals, e.g. Mo, W etc. Cathodes fabricated from semiconducting materials provide greater degree of flexibility to the emission process depending upon varying dopant concentrations. Furthermore, cathodes possessing robustness and metallic properties are essential for the realization of durable and efficient field emitters. Numerous preparation techniques and extensive application of graphene due to its excellent mechanical and chemical properties have catapulted the research on two-dimensional materials to a whole new level. Having excellent physico-chemical properties and analogy with graphene, two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are already in prominence providing a potential platform for various theoretical and experimental analyses. Their layered structure, formed due to weak Van der Waals forces, provide flexibility in extracting two dimensional structures which are essential in the context of flat panel displays powered by field emitted electron beam. In this talk I’ll discuss on the current status on the 2D materials and its composites for future efficient field emitter devices.
